Hyperpigmentation: Dark Spots On The Skin

Facebook Google + Twitter Pinterest

Dark spots on the skin are an extremely common condition, and they’re widely recognized across age, gender, and ethnicity. Also known as hyperpigmentation, dark spots are formed in a variety of ways. While hyperpigmentation can be a mark of aging skin, and in fact make us appear older than we are, some forms of skin discolouration can appear as young as early childhood.

Essential Oils - What’s the fuss about?

Facebook Google + Twitter Pinterest

A recent trend has taken over the cosmetic market: essential oils. These oils claim to have a variety of healing properties, but what are they, and do they deliver?

You’ll notice that most of these oils have been used for thousands of years in their native cultures, and are just making their way to Western attention. If you’re looking for a natural remedy, some of these oils may be just the thing you're looking for!

Anti-Wrinkle Creams

You’ve probably heard a lot about anti-wrinkle creams, and no doubt you’ve seen them line the shelves of every cosmetic store. Creams that boast they can “rewind the clock”, “fight aging” and “fill in wrinkles”. But do they actually work? And if so, how are they working?

The anti-aging branch of the cosmetic product market grosses millions of dollars a year. With the industry booming, more and more products are being created and marketed towards people trying to slow or prevent the natural aging process. However, the FDA has fairly lax standards when it comes to cosmetic products that boast anti-aging effects. Their concern lies in the safety of a product, not its effectiveness. Therefore there’s no guarantee that the cream labeled “anti-wrinkle” will actually reverse your fine lines and prevent new wrinkles from forming.

Sunscreen & Your Skin

We all know the importance of sunscreen, but do you know what it’s actually doing to protect you? Do you know what to look for when you shop? Did you know different sunscreens protect against different things?

With the continued evolution of science, we know much more today about the sun and its effects on our skin than ever before. Things we previously thought harmless we now know are extremely dangerous, and the impact the sun has on our skin has (no pun intended) really come to light.

What Is Mineral Makeup?

Facebook Google + Twitter Pinterest

One of the newer trends in the cosmetic industry is mineral makeup. This is makeup that opts for natural ingredients rather than synthetic chemicals, which can irritate and damage the skin. However, mineral makeup isn’t a new concept. Since ancient times people have painted their faces and bodies with natural minerals and earthly pigments. Somewhere along the line though we started adding things, like artificial ingredients to bulk up the product and preservatives to give it a longer shelf life.

Mineral makeup has been around since the 1970s, when pressed powders began being made with finely milled minerals. The frontrunners of the mineral makeup industry as we know it today are companies like JaneIredale, BareMinerals, and PurMinerals, all founded in the mid 1990’s. Since its arrival on the scene, mineral makeup has continued to grow in popularity. But be careful what you buy, because many of the products marketed as “mineral makeup” aren’t as true to the name as they may seem.

Acne at Every Age

Let’s be real -- acne can really suck. It can make you self-conscious to the point of disrupting your life, and it can affect you at any age. We all know that dealing with acne is an essential teenage experience, but what happens when acne follows you into adulthood? Almost every teen battles with acne (around 95%), but did you know about 25% of adults struggle to control their breakouts?

Tips for Great Skin

I don’t need to tell you that living a healthy lifestyle will get you better looking skin. Or do I?

With a booming cosmetic industry full of "miracle" products and treatments, many people think they can ignore basic skin care rules and use these “cheats” when things get bad. “It’s okay, pass me that tanning oil...I’ll just get an IPL in the fall”. “I don’t need to wear a hat, they have lotions for hyperpigmentation now”.

Maybe it’s part of our “act now, worry about the consequences later” attitude, but many people actually believe this train of logic. But i’m here to tell you: no, no, no! We all know the cliche “the best defense is a good offense”, but when it comes to your skin, this is very good advice.
